Abstract:The Japanese economy grew strongly in the first half of last year but faces a much tougher time in 1997. In the first half of 1996 GDP was 4% higher than in the first six months of 1995. However, as expected, there was little growth in the third quarter. The prospects for growth in 1997 will be dominated by the impact of the government's budget measures which were announced in December. If these measures are implemented in April as planned, Japan is likely to be one of the slowest growing economies this year.
