Abstract:Activity in the fifteen member states of the European Union gathered pace during the three months to September 1996. Real GDP was reported to have been 0.8% higher than in the previous quarter, having risen by 0.3% in the first two quarters of the year. During this period , exports are estimated to have risen by 3.5% over the previous quarter and there was a recovery in private consumption which expanded by 0.6%. This pickup in growth has been accompanied by good news on the inflation side, with the annual rate of EU inflation falling to a record low of 2.2% in November 1996.
