Abstract:The pickup in European economic growth has been accompanied by inflation convergence within the European Union. Export performance has started to improve in Europe, the outlook for European economy is good for 1997 and 1998. The recovery continued in German economy and there will be stronger growth ahead. Inflation will be remaining low. The labour market situation remains bad. In France there has been signs of recovery in the domestic market and export orders have remained strong. The French budget deficit is falling further.Italian economy remains week but the outlook for 1997 and 1998 gives a revival of domestic demand and a recovery in exports should lead to slight pickup in growth this year. The chance of Italy hitting the Maastricht deficit criterion is small unless interest rates fall sharply.
