| Abstract: | This paper investigates the following issues related to the development of US economy: strong growth in domestic demand that is set to continue; impact of Asian crisis that remains uncertain but will reduce growth significantly as trade balance takes the strain. Growth in 1997 turned out much as expected with domestic demand growing by around 4% and net trade holding back growth slightly. For the second year in a row households' net financial wealth grew strongly on the back of a surge in US equity prices. |
