Abstract:The present paper focuses on the Japanese economy. Japan was the only member of the G7 to avoid an outright recession during the first half of the 1990s. However, it suffered a sustained period of stagnation which lasted from the end of 1991 until the beginning of 1995. This period of stagnation was brought to an end by further interest rate cuts and a series of increasingly large fiscal stimuli. The economy began to pick up during 1995 and grew by 4.1% in 1996.
