Abstract:In this study, new data on the location and background of entrants into the U.S. tyre (henceforth as: t.) industry is used to analyze why the industry got so regionally concentrated around Akron, Ohio, a small city with no compelling advantages for t. production. It is explored where the Ohio (here as: O.) entrants came from. It is analysed how proximity to other t. firms affected the longevity of t. producers. It is also examined how the heritage of the O. entrants influenced their origin and longevity. It is suggested that the Akron t. cluster grew primarily through a process of organizational reproduction and heredity rather than through agglomeration economies.
