Abstract:In this study, research relating to the design semantics of desirable products and the crime of theft is described. The methods range from the review of existing designs of mobile phones with associated systems and technologies, the perception of crime from the viewpoint of a student designer and the opinions of young offenders (as: y-offrs.) about proposed design solutions (as: d-sols). Conceptual designs (herein as: c-ds.) are developed in consultation with the Mobile Data Association. C-ds. are reviewed by a sample of groups of y-offrs. and 'non-offender' (as: non-offrs.) consumers of similar age. Differences btw. offrs. and non-offrs. are uncovered as to their perceptions of the deterrent effect of different d-sols.
