Abstract:The decline of the nuclear power industry may be halted by intensified concern about the production of greenhouse gases in the burning of fossil fuels. Whether or not there is a nuclear revival in the longer term will depend in large part on a socially acceptable solution to the problem of radioactive waste management. Great technical uncertainties surround this question, and these are exploited in public debate by all sides. Whereas the control of radioactivity is older and technically more sophisticated than the control of wastes from other modes of electricity generation, this does not necessarily give it a clear advantage in such comparisons.
