Abstract:For an economic order to remain within ecological boundaries, countries need to respond to ecological feedback effects. Resulting environmental compliance costs have so far hardly influenced trade flows and firm location decisions. Future developments of economic integration and the increasing urgency of stricter environmental objectives are shown to change this picture. Primarily for the case of transnational a nd global environmental problems countries will need to be relieved from the threat of competitive disadvantage.
