| Abstract: | The Commission submitted a coordinated package of related documents aiming to chart a passage through the challenges, opportunities and problems presented by the prospect of enlargement. Environment council reaffirmed the EU's commitment to the adoption of legally binding targets for greenhouse gas emissions at the conference of the parties to the UN climate change convention in Kioto, Japan. The Commission adopted a strategy aimed at doubling the current market share of combined heat and power to 18% by 2010. The signatories to the 1987 Montreal protocol, meeting 10 years later, agreed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out methyl bromide along lines proposed by the EU. |
