Abstract: | Once the mid-1990s the EU has vigorously pursued a policy of replacing non-reciprocal preferences with developing countries in the Mediterranean, Latin America and South Africa, with bilateral free-trade agreements (FTAs). The current situation is summarized showing nine agreements concluded under the EU's Euro- Mediterranean Partnership programme and two further agreements with South Africa and Mexico. These initiatives may be regarded as a third wave of regionalism by the EU. This article provides a synopsis of the agreements. It is important to appreciate that these are substantial agreements running sometimes to over 1,000 pages of text and so the table can only provide a brief statement of a more complex reality. |
