Abstract:From transforming mud paths into roads to maintaining today's modern highway system, the pace of change at the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) in the United States (U.S.) has been fast during the 102 years since its establishment. As there are many challenges for the organization to be faced, its KM Office is playing the key role. This article explains the role of communities of practice (CoPs) playing in facilitating collaboration and knowledge sharing at VDOT, sharing the secrets of their success in forming, developing and maintaining these CoPs.
