Abstract:Two of the most popular strategies for ameliorating greenhouse warming via a substantial reduction in future fossil fuel consumption are examined: first, displacing fossil fuels with revitalized nuclear power, and second, reducing demand for fossil fuels by increasing energy efficiency. The principal finding is that even a massive worldwide nuclear power programme sustained over a period of several decades could not solve the greenhouse problem. The key to ameliorating future climatic warming is to improve the efficiency of energy usage. Improving electrical efficiency is nearly seven times more cost-effective than nuclear power for abating carbon dioxide emissions.
