Abstract:The Chernobyl disaster was a crushing blow to the prestige of the Soviet nuclear power programme and Soviet technological competence in general. This clear failing, coupled with the process of glasnost, led to an unprecedented opening of the Soviet nuclear programme to international scrutiny and an apparent willingness to embrace Western technology and expertise. But the performance of reactors in the Comecon is good. This emerges from detailed analysis. The picture that is emerging of the West stepping in to bale out technologically naive countries with their superior expertise and technology does not seem to be appropriate given the above findings and the shortcomings of nuclear power in the West.
