Abstract:The statement of the UK government /9 November 1989/, withdrawing all nuclear stations from privatization and cancelling the three Sizewell B pressurized water reactors which were to have followed on, was a blow to the nuclear industry. The reversal of decades of government support for nuclear power, and the figures which were becoming available of its relative high-cost, caused the House of Commons Energy Select Committee to conduct an inquiry, which culminated in the Report The Cost of Nuclear Power. The main points of the Report are described. The causes and the possible consequences of the collapse of nuclear power are analysed.
