Abstract:From a critical viewpoint, this paper explores the logics behind performance appraisal systems in Western contexts in aiming at better understanding their applicability in the Middle East (ME). A literature review (herein as: lit-rev.) dealing with the major justifications and uses of Performance appraisal systems (PASs) is presented. PASs are articulated around five main logics: control, continuity, formality, information and motivation. Based on the lit-rev. and a case study, it is shown that research on PAS in the ME cannot be performed assuming the same logics. The findings make it possible setting key questions for future PAS research in the ME and general non-Western contexts characterized by prolonged critical external conditions.
