Abstract:Monetary policy stimulates economic activity in industrial countries. After the 1995 slowdown, economic activity has gained momentum during 1996. In Japan, there has been a clear upward. In 1996, the US economy has grown stronger than in 1995. In western Europe, the weakness of 1995 has been overcome. The acceleration of the growth in GDP was mainly caused by an expansionary course of monetary policy. The situation on the labor market remained weak in Europe and Japan. In the US, the economy is at full employment. The rate of inflation remained moderate. Given the impulses from monetary policy, the recovery will continue in 1997.
