Abstract:The kind of philosophical understanding needed by an economist, and the particular kind of philosophical or methodological analysis he must pursue, is concerned with achieving adequate clarity regarding the somewhat "deeper" concepts and assumptions of economic theory. Once a reasonable degree of clarity is achieved regarding the aims which the subject is pursuing, then the question of the "methods" by which these aims can, or cannot, be achieved will also be considerably clarified.
