Abstract:Japanese institutions have been slow to formulate defence strategies with Japan's financial deregulation gathering pace and foreign players emerging as winners. Some see their salvation in growth areas such as investment banking and asset management, but their real future may be in linking up with outsiders. It is suggested that even strong players will look for alliances with foreign institutions. One global bonus is to be expected for non-Japanese firms: a reduced presence of Japanese firms in overseas markets.
