Abstract:China's total grain yield of 1996 was 475 million ton, with an increase of 3.2% from the previous year and a per capita yield of 380kg. The problem of supply and demand is rather serious, but not beyond solution: (1) strive to maintain the total cultivated area (2)enhance the utilisation degree (3)improve fields of low and medium yield (4)promote agricultural science and farming techniques mainly by means of breeding and spreading of improved variety. (5)adjust crop structure (6)increase material investment and raise utilisation efficiency (7)along with the endeavour to increase grain yield, devote great effort to the development of diversified economy (8)economise on and manage well grain. It is estimated that no less than 10% of grain is lost during the process of growing, harvesting, storing, transporting, marketing processing and consuming.
