Abstract:Most economists have believed that there are objective facts about the subject matter of economics and that economic theorizing is able, and should do its best to approximate relevant truths about them. Whether or not they are realists in some such loose sense today is an open question. This study in the realist philosophy and methodology of economics has been inspired by the post-positivistic resurgence of scientific realism and the debates around it in the general philosophy of science in the past three decades or so.
