Abstract:Many organizations take a "big bang" approach to knowledge management, hiring a CKO, conducting a company-wide assessment for technology needs, and rolling out a program across the whole enterprise. In contrast, Boeing's strategy is to start small and build on existing successes. Here, the author describes how the company is using this strategy to address two critical issues, capturing and transferring knowledge from employees, especially those who are nearing retirement, and indexing paper and electronic documents so they are searchable throughout the company.
