| Abstract: | In this paper, a formal model is provided of endogenous border formation and choice of defense spending in a world with international conflict (here as: int-c./int-cs). Examined are both the case of democratic governments and of dictatorships. The model is consistent with three observations: 1. countries' break-up (here as: b-up.) should follow a reduction in the likelihood of int-cs., 2. the number of regional conflicts btw. smaller countries may increase as a result of the b-up. of larger countries, 3. the size of the peace dividend is limited by the process of country b-up. |
