Abstract:Aero engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce is an example of defence contractor that has diversified away from defence into the civil sector. Many other defence contractors have shown reluctance to develop civil applications. This article concentrates on the company’s civil aerospace business and its development since 1945. The review evaluates the effectiveness of the various strategies used in the civil aerospace field. The analysis pays attention to the governance arrangements, changes in market conditions and technology development over a 60-year period.
