Abstract: | Models for comparing the effectiveness of defense before and after bomb-release-line are presented. A systematic approach is provided to the problem, taking into account such factors as the duration of the war, depreciation of target-value during war, multilayered defense, suppression, and deterrence. A system designed to engage before the bomb-release-line must have short reaction time. Unless large defense force is available defense after bomb-release-line is more effective. The value of the defended targets is shown to be a marginal factor. The selection of a military tactic for defense may involve the tradeoff between minimizing immediate damage to the defended targets and maximizing the attacker's casualties. |
