Abstract:This article deals with a merger of five German unions to form the new multi-industry union called ver.di. Its focus is on the merger's effects and on developments in the post-merger phase. Various internal problems of the new union are examined, concentrating on those flowing from the adoption of a matrix form of organization. In addition, also dealt with are the external relations of ver.di, with other unions and with the central organization of German trade unions, the DGB. It is concluded that the creation of ver.di is likely to exacerbate competition among German unions, further eroding the position of the peak association.
