Abstract:This article discusses the communication challenges faced by Merril Lynch in its merger with Advest. The research is based on interviews with Advest employees at the time of the merger. Findings suggest that Merril Lynch determined that at least 65 percent of Advest employees would need to join Merril Lynch by the closing of the merger and 50 percent eventually did not join. The reasons stemmed from the antiethical reputation of Merril Lynch.
