Abstract:The UK market for replacement car parts is covered, including tyres, engines and engine parts, electrics, mechanical parts, transmissions, exhaust systems, wiper blades, other parts. The total car aftermarket was valued at GBP 4,178m in 1990, a growth of 20 percent since 1986. In real terms the market declined by 7 percent over the five years to 1990. Replacement parts represent the largest sector with a stable 84 percent share of market. Tyres represent the largest sector of replacement parts, with a 21 percent share. Technological improvements and enhancements in car manufacture have resulted in less wear and tear. The market is expected to increase by 8 percent in real terms to the mid-1990s.
