Abstract:A few years ago service activities were under the control of vendors or users. Maintenance companies were small. But nowadays they have a much greater impact both on maintenance itself, and its costs. Maintenance bills went up from 20% to 35%. Service charges amount to roughly 4 to 7% of equipment's list price. Quality is also a key issue. Some recommendations on how to select a service organization are made. The necessity of working out a service plan is emphasized. More attention must be paid to vendors' service support. Maintenance functions developed at IBM and CDC are mentioned. The practice of independent, third-party service organizations is sketched.
