Abstract:What difference does it make having a personnel professional on the board of a company? The author presents the results of a recent survey by Warwick and Sheffield Universities, which suggests that organisations with an HR director on the board are more effectively managed. Looking across all the data, a very consistent picture emerges of a rounded, sophisticated personnel function being much more likely to exist when there is a main board director wholly or mainly devoted to personnel matters. It is likely that there will be rather more head office personnel managers present as well.
