Abstract:What do we mean by "a good employer", and how can an organisation achieve that distinction in the 1990s? These were the issues addressed last month by John Purcell in his inaugural lecture as professor of human resource management at the University of Bath. This is an edited version of his paper. The Quarry Bank cotton mill at Styal, nestling un the Cheshire countryside just outside Manchester, is one of the most impressive sites of industrial archaeology in the country.
