Abstract:This paper explores the conditions under which the prior partnering (herein as: p-g.) experience (hereafter as: exp.) of firms contributes to value creation in their new alliances. It's proposed that prior exp. with the same partners provides greater benefits than 'general p-g. experience'. Some of the boundary conditions for the effects of partner-specific (here as: p-s.) exp. are further explored. It is suggested that the effect of p-s. exp. on value creation in alliances is moderated by the extent to which the assets of the new partner differ from those of the firm's prior partners. It is predicted that the value of p-s. exp. will increase under high levels of firm-specific uncertainty. The hypotheses are tested using comprehensive longitudinal multi-industry data on joint ventures formed among Fortune 300 firms from 1987 to 1996. The results provide support for the p-g. exp.'s contingent value.
