Abstract:This paper explores the extent of non-standard working time (NSWT) all over in Europe and highlights the contrasts and similarities between two different varieties of capitalism (coordinated market economies and liberal market economies) using large-scale Cranet data. Variations are explored in the extent of different forms of NSWT (overtime, shift working and weekend working) within these two forms of capitalism, controlling for firm size, sector and the extent of employee voice. Overall, no strong link between the variety of capitalism and the use of overtime and weekend working is found but shift working showed a clear distinction between these forms of capitalism. Strong employee voice is found to associate with greater use of NSWT.
