Abstract:The fieldwork for the case study reported was carried out in Midland Bank (UK) plc. during 1986/7. The main elements of the bank's promotion processes are described. In particular, the concept of a "promotion culture" is emphasized. Being a major part of any organizational culture it must be fully understood before the impact of changes in formal promotion systems can be anticipated. The formal promotion system is outlined. The characteristics of the organizational culture are highlighted. The importance of promotion for individual managers is assessed. Awareness about promotion and promotion behaviour are examined. Phases in the career cycle are specified. Conclusions are drawn and a series of propositions are offered.
