Abstract:Bond investors cursed Alan Greenspan in February when a Fed-inspired sell-off cost them billions of dollars. Economists scoffed when he told them he needed to head off inflation. But Greenspan stuck to his guns and most of the critics now admit he was right. That's one reason he's Euromoney's central banker of the year. Greenspan has had far less success in defending the dollar, which fell to post-war lows this year against the yen and the Deutschmark. The currency's decline may reflect the yawning US currency account deficit, as well as the Clinton administration's attempts to talk the dollar down in order to put pressure on Japan during trade talks.
