Abstract:There have been International Tin Agreements (ITAs) since 1956, which is the longest period of operation of any of the post-war commodity agreements. A conceptual framework is elaborated to study the interaction of commodity market intervention and organized futures trading. The most important objectives of the sixth ITA are examined regarding the markets, the traders and the market regulators. The main trends in tin consumption are analyzed during the 1976-1985 period. The resources of the International Tin Council (ITC) at the outset of the sixth ITA in mid 1982 are considered. The ITC objectives, constraints and trading strategy are discussed in detail. The lessons of stabilization, information supply and seeking remedies are summarized.
