Abstract:Factors influencing the development of world-wide industry are listed and described. The development of Japanese automotive industry is examined as a progress from competition on the basis of market share to competition on the basis of quality, variety and high-tech gadgetry. The background of the present problems is outlined. Responses are analysed. Economic internationalization is described. It is found to be important for the Japanese auto manufacturers to learn from their Western counterparts how to work effectively abroad in a foreign culture. Obstacles to international alliances are examined. The Ford-Mazda alliance is used as a successful illustration.
