Abstract: | More than half of the USA workforce now consists of minorities, immigrants, and women. Managers have to learn to manage diversity. The affirmative action cycle is defined. It is shown that using a "pipeline perspective" a self-defeating and recruitment-oriented cycle with six stages is generated which leads to great expectations, frustration and crisis. Ten guidelines are determined for learning to manage diversity: 1. clarify motivation; 2. clarify vision; 3. expand focus; 4. modify assumptions; 5. audit corporate culture; 6. modify systems; 7. modify models of managerial and employee behaviour; 8. help people to be pioneers; 9. apply the special test devised to identify the programs and policies that created problems; 10. continue affirmative action. |
