Abstract: | Leadership is a reciprocal process: it occurs between leaders and their followers. Over the last six years 7,500 follower managers have been asked in a survey to name the most admirable traits of their leaders. According to this research, the majority of followers admire and look for leaders who are honest, competent, forward-looking and inspiring. Three of these characteristics are the bases of what social scientists and communication experts refer to as "credibility". Credibility is earned, it is not conferred by title or position. Five fundamental actions that can help to build it are examined: listening to constituents; standing up for one's beliefs; speaking with passion; leading by example; conquering oneself. |
