Abstract:Foreign managers of international companies often face problems in mobilizing their local employees due to the cultural differences and paternalistic management approach. This article investigates the differing views held by foreign managers and local workforce of a foreign-owned production plant in Mexico, and discusses how the company managed to mobilize its personnel by building a strong sense of community and replacing the paternalistic management model to a certain form of collective control. The study shows that the key challenge to successful cooperation between local and foreign employees is overcoming the intercultural misunderstandings.
