Abstract:Several information service managers have elevated local area networks (LANs) to serve higher computing tasks for the company. They face the challenge to connect up servers and applications on geographically separated segments to make this new style of computing over wide area networks (WANs). New public data networks can handle network protocol stacks. Dial-up routers are another emerging alternative to costly private line for WAN connectivity. One of the new breed of LAN interconnection options is UUNET's AlterNet, a dial-up public data network service; some data of this WAN are presented.
