Abstract:In an era of tremendous change, utilities are finding it more and more challenging to implement and maintain cost-effective systems that truly support their business. Competition is driving utilities to technologies that can enable them to satisfy customer demands and compete more successfully. First of all, they must focus on total integration - integrating the many disparate systems that have existed to serve individual functions, combining them to communicate and function as one information system. To this end, utilities must follow the trends to distributive processing, client-server architecture, open systems, object-oriented design and more mature database technologies.
