Abstract:This article examines the development of more sustainable consumption patterns by using the concept of household metabolism. It aims to determine the factors explaining the environmental load due to household consumption. A cross-national comparison of the average household energy requirements of the Netherlands, The United Kingdom, Norway, and Sweden is presented. Finally, individual households, government, and the various economic and institutional actors are given advices for more sustainable consumption patterns.
