Abstract:It is argued that parents provide help with housing downpayments to encourage the production of grandchildren (here as: g-chn.), related to the "demonstration effect". Parents desiring transfers in the future have an incentive to make transfers to their own parents to instill appropriate preferences in their children. This generates a derived demand for g-chn. Empirical work indicates behaviour consistent with subsidization of the production of g-chn. and the demonstration effect.
