Abstract: | This paper examines whether ethnic (henceforth as: e.) and non-ethnic (as: non-e.) family firms (as: f-firms) in the United Kingdom (U.K.) differ in their strategy-making. The typology of strategic (as: str.) decision-making produced by Whittington is used to derive contrasting predictions of str.-making by e. vs. non-e. f-firms. Based on a questionnaire study of 76 high-growth f-firms, and subsequent in-depth fieldwork with 40 of these, it is shown that the e. origin of the controlling family has a significant influence in determining the dominance of a particular str. paradigm. However, successful high-growth f-firms are not associated with any particular school of strategy. |
