Abstract:The family farm became at the time of French Revolution the prevailing structure of production in France. The family farm is a special unit of production where ownership and labour are closely related through the family. In the 1950s, it adopted a new specialized and productive model of agriculture. Trying to escape from an overexploitation of family labour, such farms managed to modernize production methods and increase production significantly. Nowadays, the family farm has run up against the exigencies of concentration. The signs of new adaptations are analyzed, e. g. the development of alternative models that would keep the family farm from becoming extinct.
