Abstract:The household production framework can be seen as an attempt to impose restrictions on household demand and supply functions. It is therefore of interest to see whether the optimum tax structures approach can help to establish a better economic intuition for optimum tax policy under second best conditions. A consumer behaviour model and its comparative statics properties are presented. Then two models of optimum taxation are analysed. Focus is solely on efficiency, and the problem is to choose indirect tax rates. Finally an optimum linear income tax is explained when inequality between individuals is caused both by market and household productivity differences between persons.
