Abstract:A synthesis of demographic and economic data about the purchases of consumer goods and distribution is given. Special attention is paid to four European countries (Federal Republic of Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Spain). Data on the purchasing of household goods (household durables) are presented and analyzed. Change patterns in the buying of some products of mass consumption are identified. In an international comparison as a fifth country Switzerland is also included. As a general tendency, a relative decrease in spending on the products of food industry can be observed. Based on the data and accompanying analysis several conclusions are drawn.
