Abstract:In March 1986, Ford Aerospace and Communications Corp. won the contract for the construction of two Superbird satellites. The $600 million Japanese satellite system consists of Superbird A & B, earth station, and terrestrial facilities. There will be 31 transponders on the satellites. Superbird A was launched in June 1989 and is carrying communications traffic. Superbird B was lost in the Ariane V36 launch failure. There may be another launch in 1991 or 1992. Until that Superbird A must carry the traffic load of both satellites.
