Abstract:Asian central banks have accumulated foreing currency reserves on such vast scale that it is a struggle to invest them. Foreign bond salesmen are keen to help. Rich individuals, mutual funds and pension funds are appearing, all hungry for yield. Over the past two years, many Asian investors have suddenly become a driving force in international bond markets. Central banks are not the only investors in Asia with growing amounts of money to spend. A range of new investors with an appetite for more speculative securities is broadening the type of bonds which investment banks can place in Asia. Southeast Asian and Chinese investors are clearly destined to play a more important role in the global bond market.
